The purpose of this page is to provide
faculty with examples of pedagogy applied in online teaching.
The first part of this section will provide
written examples with references,
which will include but not limited to:
- Critical Thinking - use the discussion board to develop
critical thinking skills - look towards Brookfield and Gilly
Salmon
- Empowering the learner - let the learner shape the
direction and content of the course by using the assessment
tools to survey the class - Patricia Cranton
- Self Directed learning - provide external resources
on the web
- Constructionism - learning results in an artifact
that can be shared with the community
- Constructivism - use of computer-mediated communication
(i.e. e-mail and instant messaging), computer supported collaborative
work, case-based learning environments (i.e. simulations), and
computer-based cognitive tools (i.e. databases and spreadsheets).
Other applications include synchronous and asynchronous communication,
hypertext based programs to promote debate, case based problems
and database based programs.
The second part of this section will include an "Online
Teaching Showcase". The following resources will
be provided to document and showcase the work of Seton Hall's
Faculty and staff in online teaching, and to assist in the professional
development of on online teachers / designers at the university
through the collegial sharing of work and ideas. This section
will include:
- Example Units Developed in Bb: This area
will provide examples of how Bb can be used to create and compliment
courses online. Different disciplines will be highlighted.
- Examples of Unit Templates Developed in Bb: These
templates will be designed to help the novice online teacher
get started.
- Examples of technology other than Bb: This
area will highlight online teaching using custom web sites,
PowerPoint Presentations, and streaming audio and video.
- Research Online: Following will be a list
of research papers by Seton Hall's faculty and staff in the
areas of online learning and flexible learning.
