New Art in a New Space

Second Life residents gathering
Yesterday, on the NMC Second Life Campus, five artists assembled to discuss creating and displaying their work in the Second Life space. Present were art lovers, gallery owners, performing artists, sculptors, scripters and artists, creating an interesting mix of perspectives. Moderated by Ninmah Ash, audio for the event was pushed through the regular SL audio channel, enabling the SL residents to listen to the panel in addition to using the chat box. Issues concerning property rights, distribution and protection proved to be hot topics as panelists debated the details of the Linden Lab contract. More interesting to me was the dialog regarding the identification of unique opportunities to create a new art in Second Life not present in real life. With the ability to reuse materials, work with pieces regardless of scale, ability to add scripting and interactivity, and the ability to control the viewer’s experience, all artists agreed that making Second Life art had no analog in real life.

Panel of Second Life Artists
After the show, I had a chance to meet up with one of the artists, Vlad Bjornson who creates sculptures in Second Life in addition to producing short nature video music pieces. We were joined by host Sasun Steinback, art gallery owner Ehdward SpenglerI and Larry Pixel. We talked quite a bit about students using Second Life with Vlad volunteering to be a part of the virtual team building hunt for Danielle’s IO Psychology class to discuss art in Second Life.
