Time - Person of the Year 2006
December 18th, 2006 by trottahe

The December issue of Time Magazine identified its Person of the Year for 2006… YOU (or should I say”us” ). It is fitting that I should highlight this article as my last post for the category Columbia Fall 2006. This blog category refers to posts that relate to my coursework in the Instructional Technology and Media specialization at Teachers College, Columbia University lately.
What is soooooooooooooo cool for me is that topics that I found so interesting that were presented in my courses this past year or that I personally observed as technology trends have really developed into a “revolution”, more widespread than iust in the context of teaching and learning. I remember bringing the concepts of social software, self publishing and virtual words to our campus, only to be met with raised eyebrows.
This past year has seen, as Time magazine remarked, the bringing together of small contributions of many people to create a networked whole. These tools are social in nature, encouraging the sharing of information within communities based on commonalities. Coupled with the creation and refinement of identity, we now have something similar to Gee’s comments and thoughts in his final chapter (see post below). It is these same principles of identity formation and community that makes video games an effective learning tool … an interesting connection!
Onto 2007 … Happy New Year!
